A sunny day at Belsay welcomed the 1864's to their first home game of the season. Grateful thanks to Simon Birtwisle for substituting for 13 overs before Will Young could make an appearance. A debut for Finn Birtwisle as the 64's invited Humshaugh to bat.
Ani Kalluri (rm) & Aadi Bethanabatla (ob) opened against Hedley Renton & Robert Forster. A strong start by Humshaugh saw 33 scored in 5 overs but in the 6th Renton (18) aiming to hit over mid off, skied & a retreating Jacques took a good catch, 41-1.
Paddy Rathbone (rm) & Jacques Graham (sla) took up the attack from the 11th over. At 79 in the 14th Arnup (16) went back to Jacques, missed & was lbw. Garratt & Rob Forster continued building a partnership of 35 as Will Young entered the attack, Jacques bowled with good control & at 114 in the 22nd Rob Forster (40) missed a sweep & was bowled.
11 runs & three overs later Ani caught Garratt (22) on the cover boundary miscuing Will, 125 -4. At 133 in the 28th Will Forster (0) was lbw to Jacques as he missed a sweep, the ball hitting the back pad, 5 down.
Ani bowled a maiden in over 29 & Dominic Johnson (ob) joined the attack to be greeted by Parker with 6 then 4. At 156 in the 33rd Ridley (22) top edged a weep off Dominic the ball flying to mid wicket for Aadi to catch, 6 down.
Following another Ani maiden there occurred something that does not happen often as Dominic took 4 wickets in his 4th over the 36th. Ball 2, Parker (13) went back missed & was lbw. Ball 4 Winterburn (0) attempted a pick up into the leg side & was bowled. Ball 5 Batey (0) forward but neatly stumped by Matthew Rathbone; Ball 6 Wilson (0) had a mow & missed to be bowled.
A first ever hat trick & 4 wickets in the over for Dominic. Complementing the 4 taken by Jacques for 29 in his 9 overs & the first by Aadi meaning all 10 wickets taken by spin !! Bravo ! Ani 9-2-33-0 was equally effective.
An all round good bowling effort backed up by spirited fielding overcoming the absence of a seamer for 13 overs.
In reply Aadi & Belinda Wewalage faced the seam of Garratt & W Forster. Belinda (0) was unlucky to be lbw to one that did not bounce from ball 3 of over 1 bowled by Garratt. Jan Ozmen & Aadi then put together a match defining partnership of 94.
Forster (rm) & Garratt (rm) bowled 5 each then Batey (rm) & Arnup (ob) but they were thwarted by positive stroke play as 61 came up in 10 overs until at 94 in the 15th Jan (41,35b, 5x4, 1x6) drove Arnup to deep cover but was caught on the boundary by Forster.
In over 15 Aadi 55( 59b, 4x4, 1x6) was lbw sweeping Arnup's off spin, a positive innings from the skipper driving through cover & cutting, 113-3. The innings stuttered a little with three wickets going down in 4 overs as Matty Rathbone (15) went back to Arnup & was bowled. Jacques & Finn had a yes/no interlude with the Jacques (2) unable ro retreat successfully & run out.
Fin (2) suffered a similar fate with Paddy, being unable to retreat, 127-6 in the 24th over.
Cometh the hour Will Young faced the seam of W Forster & Jerome Parker & struck 5x4, three in the 26th to cover to point & to mid wicket & two more in the 29th off the returning Garratt to win the game by 4 wickets with 11 overs to spare, Paddy (6*) an undefeated partnership of 21 *
A good all round display overcoming the absence of a seam bowler, very good spells by Jacques & Dominic, a day to remember. The second wicket partnership of 94 setting up the win finished by Will (23* 18b, 5x4) with a flourish, a single & a bye. 64's top of the Div 5 South table after two games !!
Onward to Sat 2nd May 2026 SNCC 1864 v Matfen (a) 40/40. We hope you can be there to cheer the team on.
