Humshaugh won by 5 wickets..
A very youthful 1864's team with 7 juniors travelled to Humshaugh for Round 2 of the WTL Div 1 KO cup. U14's Aarav Sharma & Saumitran Prakash making their debuts in senior cricket alongside George McConnell, Jacques Graham, Zac Henderson, Tom Oliver & Ethan Hourigan, captained by Gregor Pearce.
Batting first, the 1864's opened with George McConnell & Jack Patterson who faced the seam of Garrett & Forster. First change Parkinson bowled Jack (7) in over 5, 20-1. George was joined by Will Garside & the score had reached 39 in the 9th when Will (10) top edged a catch to 45 off Parkinson.
Belinda & George continued as S Arnup entered the attack & in the 12th over Belinda (10) swung Arnup to deep square leg & was caught, 60-3. Two wickets in two balls for off spinner Crawford as first George's fine innings of 24 (3x4) ended bowled, as was Jacques (0) first ball, 60-5.
A quick single mix up between Gregor & Ethan saw Gregor (3) run out & then Zac Henderson (0) was bowled by Crawford, 73-7. Ethan & Tom Oliver then batted nicely putting on 25 for the 8th wicket until at 98 in the 19th Ethan (21,1x4 1x6), a positive innings, was bowled by Parkinson, 8 down.
Tom Oliver 11* & Aarav 4* were together as the innings closed at 103 after 20 overs.
Crawford & Forster faced the left arm seam of George McConnell & lb/g of Gregor. 14-3 after only 4 overs as Gregor had Crawford (1) lbw, George bowled Forster (2) & Renton (9) was well caught by Will off Gregor.
As Tom Oliver (2 overs for 22), Saumitran Prakash (2 overs for 18) & Zac Henderson (4 overs for 20) entered the attack a partnership developed between Parkinson & Garrett which had reached 52 in the 12th when Parkinson (30) was bowled by Gregor, 66-4.
80-5 when M Arnup (7) was nicely caught by Saumitran at mid on off Jacques sla. But Garrett & S Arnup moved on & 87-5 after 16 overs became a winning 104-5 after 17.5 overs which included 15 wides in a total of 22 extras. Gregor's 3-5 from 4 overs demonstrating again what good spin bowling has to offer.
The fielding had been tidy, Will's catch, Ethan patrolling the boundary with quick feet & a strong arm, Gregor's two direct hits narrowly failing to produce a run out. So, heartening to see young players take an opportunity to show what they can do & to learn from the experience. Onward !!
