VP'S ENJOY GOLF AT DUNSTANBURGH DESPITE ADVERSE WEATHER ELSEWHERE

9th Oct 2023

On Sunday 8th October 2023, 15 brave souls travelled north through wind & rain to the Northumberland Coast at Embleton to find that the course at Dunstanburgh was open & playable when courses throughout the region & in Scotland were not !

Chris Harker's forethought of selecting a links location proved to be accurate. As ever, we are indebted to his prescience.

Losing Nige Campbell & Mike Anderson to illness in the preceding 24 hours, 5 x 3 balls set off at 1020 after consuming the welcoming bacon roll & coffee.

Leading off were Paul Carding, John Hammill & James Brown. They were followed by Bill Kidd, Rob Peyton & David Martin; third were Chris Harker, David Gorton & Andrew Wlson. Ru Fletcher, Phil & Sam Ewart were next & lastly Colin Belfield, Alan Dickinson & DDS.

Bunkers were not in play, a little water was evident in patches on some fairways but the greens were excellent & the course played well. The light drizzle of the first 2 hours gave way to a breeze & clearer skies such that by the time the last 3 ball finished at 1415 the sun was beginning to appear. The Toon went from one down to 2-1 up as the post round soup, sandwich & chips were eagerly consumed.

With full handicaps in place & the best two to score on each hole, the winners, on 79 points, were Ru, Phil & Sam. They were followed by Paul, John & James on 75, Chris, David & Andrew on 72, Colin, Alan & Duncan on 70 & Bill, Rob & Dave on 66. 7 generations of SN members were represented !

Grateful thanks were offered to Chris for organising the venue & paying the deposit & to everyone who travelled for some distance to enjoy a most convivial day, so much so that it has been agreed that we should repeat the outstanding value offered by Dunstanburgh again in the Spring on either Sun 17 or Sun 24th March 2024. Confirmation of the chosen date will be made shortly.

May we all winter well.

Duncan.
