VP Golfers Enjoy Autumn Outing to Morpeth Golf Club

3rd Oct 2017

The Autumn VP golf outing visited Morpeth GC for the first time on Sunday 1st October. Colin Belfield & Bill Kidd made their debuts & we were delighted to welcome back David Cockerill & long distance travellers Gavin Deane-Wake from Stansted & Graham & Viv Bruce from Bourn in Cambridgeshire.

Conditions were damp as 5×3 balls set off in light drizzle at 0910 after a traditional bacon roll & coffee in the attractive clubhouse & catching up with old friends. Leading off were Bill Kidd, Mike Elliott & Mike Tait, followed by David Cockerill, Gavin Deane-Wake & David Martin. Duncan Mackenzie, Alan Dickinson & James Brown were next, then Peter Crane, Phil Ewart & Alan Fletcher. Colin Belfield, Graham Bruce & DDS were the final  3 ball.

Best two scores to count, full handicap & preferred lies, as at Close House for the British Masters which concluded the same day. As the round progressed conditions eased, the sun emerged although standing on most tees  the wind seemed always to be slightly against, wayward tee shots found trees & some greens were tricky ! The longer first nine gave way to some shorter holes on the back nine.

Impressive scoring led to a record 81 points, 42 on the front nine, for winners Duncan, Alan & James, in second on 79, Colin, Graham & Duncan, 47 on the back nine, third on 76  Alan, Phil & Peter, 66 for Mike, Bill & Mike & 61 for Gavin, David & David. Two birdies, one for Graham Bruce on the 16th & one for Mike Elliott at the 8th.

The post round soup & sandwiches went down well & a most convivial interlude concluded at 1440 with many thanks to Mike Elliott for organising the venue & timing allowing Toon supporters to get to St James’, & a promise to reconvene at a links venue in the Spring of 2018 probably Sunday March 25th. Suggestions for a venue would be gratefully received.
