Another learning experience for a very youthful 1864's against an all adult Monkseaton who have some good cricketers in their ranks. Importantly they kept going under pressure, all had a bat & a bowl including debutant Tom Young aged 12.

Monkseaton chose to bat on a sunny day at Churchill Playing Fields. Beever & Ord faced Tom Oliver (lm) & Zach Henderson (rm). A wicket for Zach in the second over as Beever (4) drove to mid on where Aadi took the catch, 8-1. Revell & Ord were watchful & the bowling accurate, only 29 from 8 overs when Patrick & David Cragg took up the attack.

Olly Alexander had a spell of three overs & then Dominic Johnson's accuracy was rewarded when he bowled  Ord (43) at 81 in the 19th his 4 over spell ending in the 25th going for only 17. Revell & Price then accelerated as Tom Young, Patrick & Aadi continued. The total had reached 184 in the 33rd over when Revell (83, 93b 12x4) was bowled by Tom Oliver.

In the 38th Price (55) was bowled by Patrick leaving Jon Aisley (25*) at the close on 233-4. 8 bowlers used, 6 juniors bowled 26 overs in total & all gained valuable experience.

In reply Belinda Wewalage & Jack Patterson faced the seam of James Gowar & Jake Lindsay both of whom got some bounce out of the wicket, which became a tad inconsistent.

An opening stand of 26 ended in the 10th over when Belinda (12) was lbw sweeping Lindsay. In over 14 Jack (15) was caught & bowled by Jon Ainsley, 35-2. Olly & Aadi batted nicely, both hitting boundaries but in the 22nd over Olly's leading edge (16, 29b 2x4) was caught at cover by Burns. In the next Aadi (11, 33b 1x4) was bowled by the returning Gowar, who bowled 5 maidens in his 9 overs.

Patrick stroked three boundaries but went back to a short pitched ball & was undone by the lack of bounce in the 29th by Burns (lm), PWH 13 (24b 3x4), 82-5. Debutant Jude Elund (4) followed in the 31st over, caught by Price off Burns & Tom Oliver (0) was caught by Ord in the gully in the next over off Lindsay, 7 down for 87.

Zach Henderson then showed positive intent & drove straight well & in company with Dominic Johnson the pair put on 18 for the 8th wicket before Dominic (7, 1x4) was caught by Beever off Burns. Zach continued until the 39th when he was caught by Lindsay at mid off, Burns' 4th wicket: Zach, a splendid innings of 21 (30b 3x4).

Tom Young (3*) & David Cragg (0*) saw the 1864's close at 117-9 after the full 40 overs. Commendable!

Availability around exam times is always tough but it does offer opportunities to younger boys & girls. Despite Patrick's considerable ongoing efforts, we hope that the concession against Leadgate on Sat 3rd  May, the first the 1864's have ever had, will not need to be repeated.

So onward to Sat 17th May 1864 v Civil Service (h Belsay) 1300, 40/40, we hope you can be there to cheer the team on.

Duncan.
