SNCC won by 4 wickets - 24 points, Burnopfield 3.
Congratulations to Burnopfield for getting the game on after an unpromising early part of the week. Overcast & cold, the wicket was towards the pavilion side. Inevitably the outfield was slow & the wicket difficult to score on.
SN invited Burnopfield to bat, Ben McKinney & John Oswell faced the right arm seam of Jonny Wightman & Tom Rogers, newly arrived from Hobart. A positive start by the home team saw 45 scored in the first 8 overs as John Oswell hit straight, taking 17 off Wighters in the 7th over.
The introduction of Sean Tindale proved decisive & in his second over, the 11th, he took a hat trick with the 4/5/6th deliveries. John Oswell (40, 37b,3x4,2x6) lbw, as he moved across his stumps, Ross Whitfield (0) playing early, wonderfully caught one handed above his head on follow through & Sam Dinning (0) bowled leg stump, 55-3.
Sean's is the first,1st team, league hat trick since Gordon Halliday achieved the same feat in 1984 v Ashington. Richard Boys-Stones took one in 1983 v Benwell. In 2006, Stephen Humble's hat trick against Scarborough was in the National Club Championship.
There followed a spell, between the 14th & 34th overs, where no boundary was scored. McGee & Crozier, bowling a nice pace, were difficult to get away & McKinney, perhaps understandably, seemed in two minds.
Brown (1) was caught by Sol at mid off Oli in over 16. In his next Acheson-Gray (0) as lbw to Oli, 70-5. Tom Rogers returned & in over 28 had McKinney (34, 65b,2x4, 1x6) lbw, 77-6. McLean (0) was caught at cover by Oli off Lee Crozier in the 29th, 79-7. In over 31, 81-8 as McGurk (0) was caught by Sean at mid off, Lee the bowler.
Matthew Oswell & Harry Lumsden then played a few shots & the score rose nicely until Lumsden (20, 44b) was held by Hewi at long on off Lee, 122-9 after 44 overs. The innings closed at 128-9 after 45 overs Matthew Oswell 24* (53b). Tinners magic, Tom Rogers showing some nice variations, Oli & Lee so hard to get away. When batters patience wore thin, attacking shots were chipped in the air.
In reply Simon Birtwisle & Sol Bell faced McGurk's off spin, round the wicket & getting turn, & Matthew Oswell's seam. Sol (6) succumbed at 16, edging M Oswell to w/k Acheson- Gray. At 22 Hewi (0) drove to cover off Oswell.
An enterprising stand of 39 between Birty & Sean put SN ahead of the rate, but ended at 60 when Sean (18, 24b,1x6) was lbw to McGurk. Birty had batted well (29,59b 1x4) but at 75, one stopped a bit & he drove Ul Haq to mid off where Dinning took the catch. Adam (11) hit two nice boundaries but, sweeping, was adjudged lbw to McGurk at 85, 5 down.
Tom Rogers & Rob Peyton batted sensibly, two boundaries to Rob, one 6 to Tom & 104-5 after 25o. At 106, Rob (12,19b, 2x4) drove Ul Haq to long off where Dinning took the catch. Will Alexander joined Tom & the pair moved steadily to the target which was reached in the 34th over Tom 22* (28b,1x4, 1x6) & Will 6* (19b 1x4).
A hard fought win in difficult to score conditions but both teams grateful to play.
Sat 4th May SNCC v Ashington (h) 1200 start 45 overs coloured clothing, we hope to see you there.
Duncan.
