SOUTH NORTH WOMEN: NWCL CHAMPIONS 2019

21st Aug 2019

Following in the footsteps of the Northumberland Women's Cricket League Championship winning teams of 2007 & 2008, South North's Women became Champions again on Thursday 22nd August after an emphatic victory over second  placed Tynedale at Roseworth Terrace.

SNCC 190-3 (16o: Jenny McDowell 46r, Ami Campbell 106: Vicki Smith 0-21, Hayley Falla 0-25, Amy Scott 0-30, Jade Makarski 0-66, Amy Radcliffe 0-29, Zoe Newton 2-15)

Tynedale 78ao (12o: Hayley Falla 45, Jade Makarski 16: Jenny McDowell 0-8, Emma Walsingham 1-24, Sarah Vince 2-23, Olivia Ditchfield 1-18, Lucy Hobbs 3-3)

SN won by 112 runs. SN 15 points. Tynedale 3.

Batting first on a grey evening, SN's Emma Walsingham & Jenny McDowell faced Vicki Smith & Hayley Falla. Emma (4) was run out in the second over but this brought in Ami Campbell who, with Jenny, put together an outstanding second wicket partnership of 152 in just over an hour.

Ami (106) despatched the ball to all parts as variations of length or line were severely punished amassing 14 boundaries & 6 sixes in an innings lasting only 43 balls in 62 minutes. Jenny (46r) struck 8 boundaries, nicely through the covers or behind square on the leg side, in a 37 ball knock lasting 61 minutes before retiring. Silena found deep mid on first ball but Olivia (8*) & Lucy (6*) saw the innings to a close on 190-3 after 16 overs. Sarah & Erin not needed on this occasion.

A mountain to climb for the visitors but the opening partnership had reached 25 before Jade Makarski hit an Emma full toss to square leg where Sarah Vince took a neat catch. Then Sarah, bowling 4 straight overs from the Grove end, had Amy Radcliffe (0) caught by Lucy Hobbs & trapped w/k Wendy Martin(4) lbw. 37-3.

Vicki Smith & Hayley took the core to 63 when Vicki drove Olivia to cover where Ami took the catch without fuss. Hayley's fine innings of 45 ended 5 runs later when she hit her wicket from the third ball of Lucy's first over, a wicket maiden, the only one in the game. In her second over Lucy bowled Abi Morrow (0) & four balls later had Amy Scott (2) caught in the covers by Ami. 78 all out in 12 overs. Full praise to all for playing on in a light that was non existent by 2000.

So a memorable season for SNCC. P 11, W8, L1, 2 conceded, 153 points.(with one other game to be determined.)

Fielding: everybody ! It matters!

A tremendous effort from the whole squad of players, some of whom were unavailable v Tynedale. Most grateful thanks to Ty Buckley & Ru Fletcher as coaches for their training input. All the indoor hours paid dividends !  To parents for all their help during the winter & the matches, especially to Richard Miller, Ian Simms, Gary Day & John Rook.

A squad photograph will be arranged (with the trophy). The SNCC Senior Presentation night is yet to be confirmed as Sat 28th September when we can salute this magnificent achievement together.
