ROSEWORTH BULLS STRONG START TO NEMWCL DIVISION 3

10th May 2019

After a postponed Cup tie v Whitley Bay & an opening round 9 wicket defeat of Parkhouse at Medicals on 30/4 (Parkhouse 66-3, RB 69-1) the Bulls welcomed new Division 3 entrants Bomarsund to Roseworth Terrace on Thursday 9th May for the first time since the 1970's when 'Bomar' were in their pomp as national village champions led by elegant opening batsman John Haig, rumbustious w/k batsman Brian Thane & redoubtable all rounder, Dore Dreyer.

Roseworth Bulls 114-5 (12o) Meears-White 27, R Fletcher 26, Green 20*: A Gardinar 1-13, Crawford 2-35

Bomarsund 85ao (12o) Scope 16, Ninthan 14, C Thornton 12: Bowers 3-25, R Fletcher 2-3, Ruddick 1-10, C Fletcher 1-15, D Cragg 1-13.

Roseworth Bulls 10 points Bomarsund 2.

Stand in skipper Ru Fletcher won the toss, & the Bulls chose to bat in a 12x 8 ball over game, max 3 per bowler. James Ruddick & the captain faced the seam of Blackwood & Adam Gardinar. Perhaps overcome by nerves, Blackwood's two overs went for 24 including 16 wides, 6 byes & 2 no balls. In contrast Adam Gardinar had 1-4 in his two, including a maiden & the wicket of Ruddick (3) bowled driving. 34-1 in the 4th.

Fletcher was joined by Tris Meears-White & the pair scored freely until at 61 Fletcher (26) was yorked by Crawford. Ian Tew (5) hit one nice boundary before being lbw to Sujwee. Allan Davidson was caught first ball by a diving A Gardinar running in from deep square leg & Meears-White (27) holed out at long on to Ninthan at 95-5 in the 11th.

Bobby Green (20*) & Ben Jones-Lee(3*) finished strongly to post 114-5 after 12overs, extras top scored with 30 ! Adam Gardinar a creditable 1-13 in 3 overs.

Bomarsund batted with 10. Scope showed intent but D Gardinar (6) fell to a catch by David Cragg at mid off from the bowling of Ruddick. Two runs later Allan Davidson held a neat first slip catch off Cal Fletcher to dismiss Besford (1). 19-2. Over 5 saw debutant U14 Aryan Kakwani take his first senior wicket as Ben Jones-Lee rolled back the years to stump Scope(16). 30-3.

David Cragg's consistency saw 3 overs go for only 13 & the wicket of A Gardinar, lbw for 4. Over 9 saw U14 Harry Bowers, also making his senior debut, bowl his off breaks with nice flight to take two wickets in his first over for 15. Another Jones-Lee stumping & a catch by Green in the covers.

Ru Fletcher's first over, the 11th, saw two more fast hands stumpings from Ben leaving the visitors 73-8 with one to go. Harry Bowers from the Grove end finished a perfect debut by surviving a 6 from Ninthan to have him caught by Ru Fletcher at cover from the last ball of the innings. Harry 3-25 from two overs. Bravo!

In a game of firsts, three generations of Thornton's were on the field at the same time as grandfather George was umpiring as son Colin & grandson Sam batted together. Harry & Aryan took their first senior wickets & behind the stumps for the Bulls, Ben demonstrated fast hands for 4 clinical stumpings. He will know if he has ever taken more in one innings !!  Wunderbar! The post match chicken curry was delicious.

We continue with the rearranged cup tie v Whitley Bay (a) on Monday 13th May 1800 start.
