Current league leaders Haydon Bridge provided too stern a test for the 64's on a warm day at Belsay on a dry pitch with some pace & bounce. Winning the toss & batting, Jacob McCord & Aaryan Wagh faced the experienced & brisk opening pair of Tom Waugh & the tall Joe Barber.

A good opening spell from each saw Jacob (6) edge Barber to w/k Cunningham at 13 & Aaryan (6) hit a Waugh full toss to cover at 19. Building nicely, Jan & Will had taken the score to 50, each hitting two nice boundaries, before Will (18, 38b 2x4) drove Watson high to point where Waugh took the catch.

At 64 Jan 22 (55b 2x4) was lbw to Elliott. Will Garside (14, 10b,2x4) & Aadesh Sahadevan again built nicely but at 81 Will edged to w/k Cunningham off Watson. Aadesh & George played some shots but at 104 Aadesh (21, 1x4, 1x6) was caught by Stephenson off Taylor. Unusually, Patrick (0) succumbed first ball, missing a straight one, 104-7.

George, driving down the ground & slog sweeping effectively, (23, 20b, 3x4 1x6) was lbw to Taylor at 117 after 34 overs. Simon (1) was bowled by a good one from Taylor & finally Josephine (6) was bowled by Stephenson. 121 all out after 36 overs, 50 more runs needed !

Barber & Kendrew faced the seam of Josephine & Simon. Kendrew (2) was bowled by Josephine at 13. Barber, driving down the ground, had two lives & at 48 three wickets fell. Watson was run out returning for an optimistic second but failing to beat George's throw to Josephine, who then threw down the bowler's stumps.

Leadbetter (0) was also run out, falling to a direct hit by Aadesh & finally Barber (37,29b, 4x4, 2x6) hit high to long on where Will Garside, racing in, steadied himself to take a good catch off Simon. 48-4, was this an opening ?

The Patrick (rm) & Gregor (lb) attack had some near misses but Taylor (40, 7x4,1x6) was batting well & the score rose to 102 when, defending, he was bowled by a cracker from Josephine, 102-5. Cunningham (14*) & Elliott (17*) saw the visitors home after 4 balls of the 24th over.

Effort, attitude & application all good but we need more runs please ! 8th place on 53 points in WTL Division 1, so far.

Sat 3rd June sees the 1864's host Wylam (h) do come along to support them.

Duncan.
