Captained on the day by Ru Fletcher the 1864s won the toss and asked Newton to bat first. A wicket in the second over got the 1864s off to a good start. Further wickets in the 5th and 9th overs had Newton in some trouble at 21 for 3. But a 4th wicket partnership of 49 held up the 1864s. David Cragg and Richard Brook both bowled well without any luck and on another day could easily have picked up 2 or 3 wickets. The 6th wicket put on 57 with the batsmen chancing their arms a bit and getting away with it. Throughout the Newton innings the 18964s fielding was very good. The innings finished on 142 for 6 in the allotted 40 overs – 2 wickets for Calum Fletcher and 1 each for Cam Skinner, Ru Fletcher and Matty Jennings. There was also a comical run out – a classic yes...no... yes.
Bobby Green and Eashan Ragbir opened the batting for the 1864s. Both batted well and kept the scoreboard ticking over. The score was 41 for 0 after 9 overs. Drinks were taken at 20 overs with the score 94 for 0. Bobby and Eashan batted with maturity beyond their years and in an unbroken partnership of 146 took the 1864s to victory in the 28th over. Bobby is 14 and Eashan is 15. It was a remarkable batting performance from both of them. I don’t recall either of them giving a chance. Bobby finished on 103 not out and Eashan on 35 not out. The future is looking good!!
And finally I must report a nice touch from Newton. The tea table included cupcakes with edible badges of both the sides. Courtesy of www.incrediblecaketoppers.co.uk
