A cold wind blew across Preston Avenue for this round 1 Smithson County Cup match. The Bulls were invited to bat, 5x4 overs per bowler. Rob Peyton & Sol Bell faced the leg spin of Josh Moors (golf course) & seam of Barry Stewart (Percy Park). Maiden overs in the second & third were a triumph, one each to Stewart & Brown.

Two nice boundaries for Sol (9) in the first but well caught by George Stewart at square leg attempting another in over 2, 11-1. 16-2 as Sean Tindale (4) attacking, was bowled by Brown. 44 -3 after over 9, in which Tom Rogers (10) had a similar fate against Durham Univ student Harrison.

51-3 after 10 overs, Rob 16* Adam 6*. 61-4 in the 12th as Cragg (11) picked out Oraikil at backward square leg off Brown. 69 -5 as Nathan Gough (4) returned for an improbable 3rd run with Rob. The slower bowling of Pollard & Moors saw Peyton accelerate, hitting down the ground in company with David Edwards.

The total had risen to 109 in the 19th, another maiden, this time from Harrison, which included the wicket of Edwards (14) bowled, attacking. 6 runs off the last left the Bulls on 117 -6.

Bowman & Kimmett face the seam of Tom Rogers (Percy Park ) & Sean Tindale (golf course). An eventful first over saw Bowman escape twice after skying to deep third man, George the unlucky fielder. 8-0 after 3 as Rogers proved hard to get away.

In over 5 Bowman (14) skied to cover from Will Alexander's second delivery, Nathan taking the catch, 16-1. Lee Crozier took up the attack from the golf course end & in his second, Brown (12) was caught by Tom Rogers at long on, 37-2. In Lee's next Kimmitt (25) advanced & missed to be stumped by Peyton, 55-3 after 10 overs.

Harrison (4) was bowled by Lee in over 12, 65-4. Sean returned from the Park end but it was George Gray in the next who persuaded Moors (26) to swing & lose his leg stump, 84-5 after 14. Only one from the 15th as Rogers proved hard to get away.

A partnership between Barry Stewart & Patrick Hallam looked promising; 91-5 after 16 overs. 4 to go, 27 to win,  Rogers & Tindale one each & Paton 2 to bowl . 8 runs, then 6, Hallam (11) bowled by Tindale & only 2 off the 19th leaving 11 to win off the last. Barry Stewart (18), batting with son George, was run out from the second delivery as a Gough throw to w/k Rob comfortably prevented a second run, 108-7.

4 more scored leaving Tynemouth 5 short at the end of 20 overs, 112-7. 7 chances, of varying degrees of difficulty , not taken, offer something to work on.

Round 2 is away to Alnmouth & Lesbury at a date to be confirmed.  We think the first time an SNCC 1st X1 have ever played there.

Onward, mes amis.

Duncan.
