SNCC won by 9 wickets - 24 points, Sunderland 1

A sunny day at Roseworth Terrace, the wicket, towards Moor Road North, was good, the outfield quick & the visitors chose to bat. Vigneswaran & Dinsdale faced the seam of Gavin Paton(rm) & Danny Collins (lm).

A wicket for Gav from the 5th ball as Vigneswaran (0) was bowled. Against tight bowling the batters defended & then in over 6 Barring (3), aiming to cut Collins, edged low to w/k Ben Sidney-Wilmot, 6-2.

A period of consolidation followed but Dinsdale stroked through mid off in overs 9 & 10, 26-2. James Lunn & Alan Davidson took up the attack & after 20 overs the score was 53-2.

Jacques Graham (sla) from the Grove began a tidy & consistent 7 over spell.  Dinsdale took opportunities & drove 3x4 in overs 22 & 23 but in over 24 Sanderson (18) skied Lunny & the catch was taken by w/k Ben Sid moving towards mid wicket, 73-3. Lunny's 9 overs, ending in over 28, going for only 29.

The total became 88-4 in the 31st as Winlow (5) swung Jacques to deep square leg where George McConnell took the catch. Dinsdale reached a commendable 50* & in company with Said took the score to 116 in the 39th when Said (11) lofted Allan to deep mid wicket for Ru to oblige, 5 down.

Three wickets fell towards the end as first Bowman (4) was bowled by the returning Gavin at 124: Sunny (1) was yorked by Danny one over later & in the last, Dinsdale (82, 142b, 12x4) skied Gavin in the air to be caught at cover by Allan. A most meritorious innings which began in the first over, ended in the last & featured pleasing drives through the offside.

The Sunderland innings closed at 148-8, Haroon 6* Mordue 3*. Three wickets for Gavin, 2 for Danny who both kept the pressure on in the early overs which included 2 maidens; one each for Lunny, Allan & Jacques, some tidy fielding & safe catching.

In reply David Edwards & Jan Ozmen faced the seam of Sunny & sla of Bowman. Not really challenged by the bowling, which offered opportunities to score & several wides, the total had reached 52 in the 10th when the captain's call for a sharp single to cover was then retracted leaving Jan (18) stranded, unable to get back & being run out at the bowler's end. David admits that it was not wise to imagine a run was there, just because you have hit a nice shot!!

Gavin joined David & the pair pushed on such that 100 runs came in the next 9 overs. David stroking 3 successive boundaries in overs 12,16 & 17 many through the covers & mid off, as Bowman, Mordue (rm) & Dinsdale (rm) suffered.  Gavin hit a 6 to square leg & the end came as Barring's only over went for 21, Gavin striking 3x4 straight & over mid wicket, David another.

So, a comprehensive 9 wicket win, David (85*, 63b,15x4), Gavin (31*, 19b, 4x4 1x6). One senses tougher challenges will follow, beginning next Sat with a visit to Hetton Lyons (a) provided the weather & the coincidence of Sunderland's appearance at Wembley do not intervene!

Sat 24th May SNCC 2nd X1 v Hetton Lyons (a) 1300,45/45 the last win/lose game before the league reverts to 100 overs, win/lose/draw from Sat 31st May. We hope you can be there to cheer the team on.

Duncan.
