Fri 8th August 2025: SNCC v Benwell Hill (a) Banks Bowl 100 ¼ final.
Benwell Hill 94-7 (100b) Abubaker Siddique 24, Andy Hunter 12, Taylor Matthews 19*, Ilahi Maleek 12: Allan Davidson 1-20, Danny Collins 0-8, Will Young 1-18, Varun Gudipati 3-23, James Lunn 1-16, George McConnell 1-7.
SNCC 98-5 (78b) David Edwards 19, George McConnell 23, Jan Ozmen 22, Ben Sidney-Wilmot 20*: Abubaker Siddique 3-21, Andy Hunter 1-30, Warren Poxon 0-15, Aaron Armstrong 0-16, Jake Robson 0-10, Seb Fletcher-Woods 0-5.
SNCC won by 5 wickets........finals day Sun 24th August, venue tbc.
Winning the toss the Hill chose to bat on a warm evening. Poxon & Siddique faced the seam of Allan Davidson & Danny Collins then Will Young & Varun Gudipati. 16 without loss after 25 balls but in the next set Poxon (6) skied a top edge off Varun to Lunny at mid off.
Lunny bowled the next 10 balls & Robson (4) cutting, was caught by Allan at point. In the next two sets, two wickets as Andy Dawson (6) under edged Varun to w/k Ben Sid & in the next Armstrong (0) was lbw to a full delivery from Will, 40-4.
In set 13 Siddique (24), who had driven down the ground & through cover nicely, was well caught by George running to his left at long off, Allan the bowler, 59-5. Two sets later Hunter (12) mistimed George to mid wicket & was caught by Danny, 61-6.
Matthews drove nicely for 3x4 to take the score to 89 with one set remaining & in that Maleek (12) swung Varun towards deep mid wicket where Will Carr, running to his right, from in front of the Pavilion at wide long on, & diving, took a very good catch in two hands. Matthews 19* & Hynd 3* as the innings closed at 94-7 (100 balls).
In reply an explosive start by the Bulls as the first 4 sets conceded 39 as Siddique, Hunter & Poxon toiled. David Edwards, cutting for 4 & driving straight for 6 & George McConnell, pulling & driving over extra cover for 6 & driving through cover & to long off for 4.
In set 5 David (19,13b,1x4 1x6) was caught by Dawson at long off, of Siddique's medium pace. In the next George (23, 11b, 2x4, 2x6) was caught by Maleek at mid wicket off Siddique & one ball later Will Carr (0) drove to Robson at extra cover, 46-3.
This became 59-4 in set 8 as Angus (8) gloved to w/k Hynd off Hunter. Jan & Ben then put together a match defining partnership of 33 as Poxon, Armstrong, Hunter & Robson sought a breakthrough. None came & the total reached 92 when Jan (22, 33b, 1x4) was run out pushing for 2. Ben 22*, (18b, 2x4) & Lunny 1* saw the Bulls home after 78 balls.
Onward to Banks Bowl 100 Finals Day on Sun 24th August with CLS, Hetton Lyons & Newcastle at a venue tbc.
