SNCC won by 14 runs.
A dark, overcast evening, 16 overs per side agreed, SN won the toss & chose to bat. Ru Fletcher & Alex Charnley faced the seam of Plumb & Wright. Ru (10) was caught at mid off by Carroll at 20. Nick (2) was unlucky to be run out as the bowler touched a straight Charners drive onto the non striker's stumps, 25-2. Alex C (13) attempted to ramp, only to sky a catch to w/k Stamper, 34-3 & then Alex W (8) after 2x4, mistimed to mid wicket to be caught on the rope, 39-4 in the 8th. Some work to do !
There followed an exhilarating partnership of 94 between Angus (32* 23b,5x4,1x6)) & Gavin (63* 35b, 7x4,2x6) to provide the Bulls with a defendable total. Angus cutting, hitting through & over mid wicket & Gavin driving down the ground, launching over the scoreboard & behind square against his old team.
In reply Kieron Gilmore & captain Joe Carroll faced the seam of Ben Hobbs & spin of James Lunn. Ben an accurate 3 overs for only 8 then Gilmore (9) drove Lunny towards extra cover where Ru took an excellent diving catch at full stretch, 13-1. 27-2 as Tilley was deceived by a Gavin slower one to be bowled.
A good stand between Carroll & Stamper ensued as Finlay Pearce & Ru entered the attack & it was Finlay who persuaded Carroll (57, 38b,2x4,5x6) to drive towards cover where Ru, retreating, held another good catch above his head, 88-3, an important wicket.
Hemat (1) trapped on the crease, was lbw to Ru at 95 & at 107 Stamper (22) succumbed to an excellent Gavin leg stump yorker, 5 down. Rowell faced only 7 balls, struck 2x4 + 1x6 to be 18* but it was too late. C Wright (5) attacking, was bowled by Ru at 118 & the chase ended at 119 -6 after 16 overs. 2 wickets for Gavin & Ru, one each for James & Finlay & a mean opening spell from Ben which prevented a fast start.
Good Bulls team effort but deserved player of the match, Gavin Paton. Bravo!
So a cup double for the 2's in 2023, NEPL T20 & Roseworth Trophy, a good way to start the 2024 season.
Duncan.
