Sunderland invited SNCC to bat. Sam Ewart & Alex Charnley faced Indrarajah & Houmark. The former, brisk off only 3/4 paces, drifted the ball away & seemed to hurry the batters. A good start saw the Bulls reach 33 before Charnley (16 ) was adjudged lbw to Indrarajah, who then bowled Ewart with a good one that moved away, 34-2.

Jan Ozmen (1) was lbw to Houmark at the same score & at 47 both Tris Meears-White (8) & Ben Sid (4) were yorked by good deliveries the first from Houmark, the second from Stead, 47 5. At 63 Ross Ward (9) chased a wide one to be caught by w/k K Hutchinson off Houmark, 63-6.

There followed a splendid partnership of 78 between Ru Fletcher & Oliver Clark. Ru, in a rich vein of form, striking 15 x 4 & Oliver, rotating the strike more effectively than hitherto & hitting two boundaries, one to cover, the other to square leg. Clark (21 42b,2x4) edged behind off Indrarajah at 141. Jenny McDowell (0) driving, was bowled by Yaqoob at the same score, 141-8.

A partnership of 21 between Ru & Will Alexander (6) ended at 162 when Will was caught at mid wicket by Jeyakanthan off Yaqoob & George Gray (0) fell at the same score, guiding the second slip. 162 all out, leaving Ru 72* (15x4) with 4.1 overs remaining. 40 or 50 short of a competitive total, albeit against good bowling.

The Sunderland innings was curtailed by rain after 6.1 overs. A superb delivery from Alexander, drifting in & moving away off the seam, bowled Coates (2) with the score at 21.

This abandonment leaves the Academy languishing in 7th place, a relegation spot, on 85 points, 6 points behind Sunderland, who have played the same number of games & 20 behind Benwell Hill, who have played one more. 6 games remain, including postponed matches v Sacriston & Newcastle. We must apply ourselves please.

Duncan.
