SNCC won by 7 runs. Go to finals day Sun 8th Sept at Whitburn, second semi final SNCC v Tynedale (from 1345- final from 1630).
Going to Ashington is always a challenge so to come away with a 7-run win, Will Young bowling a nerveless last set of 5 to an attacking Greg Williams was very satisfying. Ashington chose to field, Ru Fletcher & Nathan Gough faced David Rutherford & Charlie Harmison.
10-3 after 12 balls not ideal as Ru (0) & Alex (0) edged behind in the first set off Rutherford & Nathan (4) succumbed lbw to Harmison. David Edwards & Angus Southern then fashioned an important partnership of 70 for the 4th wicket. David driving & rotating well & Angus stroking through cover or clearing mid wicket taking 6x4 in sets 9,10 &11. At 80 after 65 balls David 26 (27b 4x4) was caught at long off by Woolley of Whitworth.
Jacob struck 2x4 in the next but at 88 in the 15th Angus 41 (31b 7x4) gloved Harmison down the legside, another positive innings from an inform Angus. Lunny (12 ) was bowled by Whitworth in the 19th at 108 but Jacob (17*) & Gregor (9*) ended busily, 120, perhaps a tad under a par score.
Ashington lost McCurley (0) to his first ball from Nathan in set one. Woolley was positive hitting Albie on the leg side in set 2 but George, Ru & Nathan pulled it back & then Hetherington (8) was yorked by Nathan in set 5. A good first set from Will went for only 1 then in set 11 George persuaded Woolley (30) to sky high to backward point where Albie made good ground to take the catch, 55-3.
Rutherford & Harmison were not parted until the 19th set but there was a feeling they were always behind the rate. Harmison (21) was then caught at long off by Nathan off Ru at 104. 17 required off the last set entrusted to Will Young. 2,2, 6, but then, as Williams advanced, the best bouncer under pressure you will see became a swing & a miss, dot & with the last ball he drove to long off where Nathan obliged again, 113- 5, David Rutherford 39*, a win for the Bulls by 7 runs.
On to finals day at Whitburn on Sun 8th Sept, SNCC v Tynedale is the second semi final at 1330. We hope you can be there to cheer the team on.
