SN chose to bat & openers Will Caldwell, on debut, & Captain for the day Andrew Doig (34, 6x4) steadily put on 64 for the first wicket against the accurate seam of evergreen Keith Brown, who bowled 12 overs unchanged, 1-35, & Dan Humble at the Heaton based Medicals ground.
Matt Whitty joined Caldwell & the pair advanced the score nicely to 159 before Whitty was caught for 42(2x4,2x6). Thereafter, despite wickets falling regularly, Caldwell managed the innings well, accelerating to reach a deserved 100 & finishing with 109* (9x4, 1x6) carrying his bat. Alistair Poll took 4-31 as the lower order attacked. The declaration came after 50 overs at 214-7.
Newcastle had reached 30 when Pinnington was caught by Hollins off Davidson for 20. Carr batted nicely & despite losing Humble(14) at 61-2 to James Ruddick & later Heron(17) at 95, continued to be the backbone. Cam Skinner removed both Heron & Poll (4) in a nice spell of 2-16 off 5.
Owen Hollins (4-32 off 6.5 & at one point on a hat trick) & Andrew Doig (2-5 off 5) finished the innings in short order, Carr being last out for a splendid 79 (13x4,1x6), after 37.5 overs.
30 points for the Bulls, who move into 3rd place in NEPL Division 2, 47points behind undefeated leaders Benwell Hill but with a game in hand. Tynemouth at home next week, a chance to banish the memory of a costly defeat in 2017.
