1864s win against Mitford in arctic conditions

5th May 2019

It was cold. Very cold. Many fielders were wearing bobble hats. Some had so many jumpers on that they looked like Mr Blobby. At the second drinks break one of the umpires had a coffee.

Captained on the day by Patrick Hatcher the 1864s won the toss and chose to bat first. At 61 for 4 in the 18th over things did not look promising. But a useful partnership of 46 by Inti Fazal and Ben Thomas steadied the innings. Inti and Patrick Hatcher then put on 69 for the 6th wicket before Inti fell for 99 - to  a good catch on the boundary. The 1864s finished their 40 overs on 221 for 8. Patrick not out 54.

Mitford got off to a slow start but lost no wickets in the first 14 overs. Eventually Guy Johnson clean bowled one of the openers. He took a second wicket 2 overs later. Not to be outdone Trudy Johnson got into the act helped by a juggling catch from frozen fingers.

Realistically Mitford were not going to reach their target but a good innings from batsman 8 took them to maximum batting points.

18 points for the 1864s. 9 points for Mitford.

All credit to the players from both sides for coping with such cold winds.

The 1864s are away on 11 May to Stamfordham.
