Second placed Haydon Bridge won the toss & chose to field. The wicket was green & after two balls, the bounce seemed unpredictable as Ragbir(0) gloved to short leg off the medium pace of Waugh. Clark (6) battled but edged behind off Boyd in the 10th, 22-2. Tomlinson hit 4 nice boundaries but at 55 got one that kept low & played on for 25. Josephine Nkomo (0), on debut, was bowled at 57 & 3 runs later, George McConnell (0) suffered a similar fate. Kush (3), playing back, was bowled by Kirkup, 64-6 in the 20th.

There followed an enterprising partnership of 69 between Jan Ozmen & Patrick Hatcher. Unfazed by the occasional unpredictability of the wicket, driving & pulling, setting mini targets. The total had reached133 in the 37th when Jan (50, 76b, 8x4) was bowled by Dagg, an excellent knock in the circumstances. Ahmer Hameed (0), with an off stump guard, was lbw to a straight, full delivery two balls later. At 142 in the 38th, Patrick's valuable innings ended when he hit a full toss to deep mid wicket. Albie McPate (6*) hit a boundary off the penultimate delivery of the last over, David Cragg (1*). It seemed a competitive total on this pitch.

After two overs, rain caused a 30 minute delay & on resumption the wicket seemed to hold fewer demons, skidding on helpfully. Kendrew (21) was caught by McConnell at mid on off McPate in the 4th & one ball later Gibson (0) was lbw to Hatcher, 23-2.

The left handed Dagg survived a close caught behind appeal & the right handed Leadbitter a dropped catch in the deep as the total rose, but at 93 in the 20th Leadbitter (45), attempting a slog sweep, edged behind to Hameed. Although Josephine & George bowled nicely, further dropped catches saw the target reached after 26 overs as the spin off Cragg & Clark conceded 60 off 5 overs. Kirkup (30*, 1x4, 3x6) & opener Dagg (57*, 72b, 7x4, 1x6).

6th in WTL Division 1 on 129 points, the 1864's visit third placed Haltwhistle on Sat 2 July. A need to bounce back if at all possible. Fielding matters !

Duncan.
