Last week the 1864's defeated the 2024 champions Riding Mill; this week they defeated the 2023 champions Haydon Bridge. With one game to go in the end of season play offs, featuring the top 4 Division 1 teams, the 1864's & Wylam are tied on 38 points. So all to play for on Sat 14th Sept when the two sides meet at Belsay.
Winning the toss Patrick chose to bat. Aaryan Wagh & Jan Ozmen faced the seam of Taylor (rm) & Elliott (lm). A fast start as Aaryan pulled Taylor's first two deliveries for 6 & 4. This set the tone & continued with Jan offering support before blossoming. The partnership had reached 60 in the 13th when Aaryan (40, 4x4, 2x6) again splendidly positive, was bowled by first change Stephenson, with one that nipped back.
In the next 8 overs 55 were added with both Jan & Jacob hitting boundaries amid several bowling changes. At 115 in the 21st Jan (35, 3x4 1x6) another positive yet controlled innings, edged 4th change Cunningham to w/k Carruthers. Jacques Graham (11) was well caught & bowled by Taylor in the 29th, 149-3 but Jacob sailed on driving straight with abandon.
At 171 in the 32nd Jacob's assault (71, 3x4,7x6) ended with a catch to long on off the bowling of spinner Leadbitter. An innings full of positive hitting & good running putting the bowlers under pressure. Belinda (13) was bowled by Stephenson at 189 in the 32nd over then Olly Alexander 9* & Simon West 3* ensured the total rose above 200 to 202-5 after the 40 overs. Defendable & all this with 10 players after an injury to Zac Henderson earlier that day.
Kendrew & Gibson faced the right arm seam of McCord & West. Another fast start saw the total at 42 in the 8th when Kendrew (23), driving first change Sam Lee, edged to w/k Aaryan standing up who took the sharp chance. Sam prospered again in the 14th at 82 when Gibson (43) found Patrick diving to his right to take a memorable, one handed catch.
Three overs later David Cragg (sla) bowled Tulip (2), 89-3. At 96 in the 18th, fourth change Olly Alexander trapped Cunningham lbw. A partnership of 46 between Stephenson & Taylor threatened before two wickets fell in two overs. Stephenson (30) swung David Cragg to deep square leg where Jacques took a very good catch on the run, 142-5.
One run later Elliott (0) skied Patrick to cover where Olly took a good catch over his shoulder, 6 down. In the next over Leadbitter (4) drove David hard to cover where Sam Lee took a good low catch. At 158 in the 29th Pigg (0) edged David to w/k Aaryan, standing up, who took another nest catch.
The key wicket of Taylor (30) followed at 161 when he skied Jacques to cover where David took another good catch. The fielding had been exemplary. At 166 in the 32nd Jacob bowled Boyd (2) leaving Carruthers 3* , Haydon Bridge, 166 all out after 32 overs.
Seven bowlers used, good catching, enthusiastic fielding keeping the pressure on the batters, 4 wickets for David, two for Sam but both well supported by their five colleagues.
Onward to the decider on Sat 14th Sept at home to Wylam, from 1300. We hope the weather behaves & that you can be there to share an exciting, last game of a successful 1864 season.
Duncan.
