1864s lose last game of season against Newton by 8 wickets

16th Sep 2019

A very young 1864s side took the field against a Newton team made up entirely of senior players.. Captained on the day by Tristan Meears-White it was "agreed" with the Newton skipper that the 1864s would bat first.

David Mathew and Aryan Kakwani put on 28 for the first wicket but then wickets tumbled. 38 for 5 in the 12th over. Alan Roskilly, batting with great maturity, and Tristan put on 43 for the 6th wicket before Alan fell for a well made 23. Trudy Johnson and Tristan added 30 for the 7th wicket. Tristan was unlucky to be given out LBW (sounded very woody!!) for an invaluable 50. 124 all out was unlikely to trouble Newton too much. And so it proved.

Newton started slowly and were 27 for 2 after 14 good overs from Alan Roskilly (5 overs for 7) , David Cragg (5 overs for 3 with one wicket) and Trudy Johnson (5 overs for 18 with one wicket). Thereafter the runs came more easily and Newton reached their target without losing another wicket.

The 1864s finished 8th in the league (out of 12) with a record of played 22 won 6 tied 1 lost 9 cancelled 6. There are some positives from the season. The emergence and development of young talent - Trudy Johnson, Alexander Charnley, Alan Roskilly, Angus Southern to name but 4. What the side desperately needs is some more "mature" hands who can help with the development of the juniors.
