It is a good day when you can go to second placed, & 2022 champions, Humshaugh & win, climbing to third in the table just 11 points behind them. The home side invited the 64's to bat. The surface was dry but a tad unpredictable in bounce & the outfield predictably slow after all the recent rain.

Belinda & Jacob faced the inswing of Williamson & W Forster. An early wicket as Belinda (1) got one that kept low & was lbw to Williamson. At 13 Jacob (6, 1x4) seemed unlucky to play on as another kept low from Forster. There followed a watchful but effective  partnership between Jan & Will A who defended adroitly, ran well, including an all run 4, & hit the bad balls hard. At 20 over drinks the score was only just over 50.

At 58 Will A (28, 49b, 1x4), after a determined innings, was mortified to mishit a full toss to mid off but a crucial partnership of 45. Will Carr joined Jan & they continued in the same vein, slowly accelerating. Jan punishing off front & back foot & Will stroking through cover or working to leg, both running well. At 127, Will (30,47b,3x4) was caught off Moss ending a splendid partnership of 67.

George (0) missed a first ball full pitch & at 139 Patrick (2) in two minds, was bowled by Crawford's off break leaving Josephine (10*) to accompany Jan to the close of 40 overs on 156. Jan 67* (105b,5x4) a mature, match defining innings against a good bowling attack.

Crawford & Renton faced Josephine (rm) & George (lm). Always aiming to be positive, the openers were held in relative check but still managed to get to 60 after 13 overs. Three wickets then changed the complexion. Crawford (22,54b,2x4,1x6) was bowled by Albie as he stepped across a straight one. One ball later J. Binovac (0) was bowled, 60-2, Albie 2-12.

The prize wicket of league leading run score Renton (22, 35b,2x4) went to Partrick as his in dipping yorker hit the base of leg stump, 64-3. Consolidation required but at 74 Williamson (8) skied Will Young to point where Jan retreated, taking the catch above his head. 4 runs later R Forster (5, 33b) skied Varun to mid off where Albie, on the retreat, took a neat catch; 79-5 at drinks.

W Forster & Moss steadily put together a partnership of 26 but at 101 Forster (4, 25b) was undone by a Patrick slower yorker, 6 down. Moss (16,26b,1x4) swung once too often, skying to cover where Albie took the catch.

At 110 Arnup (3) was smartly held by w/k Belinda, edging a back foot force behind off Varun. Two runs later Elliott (4) was undone by Patrick's leg cutter & bowled. At 115, C Binovac (1) was bowled by Varun to seal a famous win in 34.1 overs.

Batting sensibly on the surface, the excellent Jan supported admirably by Will A & Will C, bowling & fielding well, Patrick back to fuller fitness, a proper team effort against a good side. The spirit is good, 196 points, third place, just 11 points behind Humshaugh in second, leaders Haydon Bridge in two weeks, we must continue!!

Sat 5th August 2023 SNCC 1864 v Mitford (h) 1330 we hope you can be there to cheer them on.
