1864s game abandoned after rain in tea interval

16th Jun 2019

A depleted 1864s side travelled to Riding Mill to face Benwell Hill.

After the heavy rain during the week the outfield was soft in parts but playable. The pitch had been covered and was dry. The 1864s lost the toss (again) and were asked to bowl first. Well done Matty Jennings who started with 3 maidens and finished with figures of 7.1-4-12-2.  David Cragg also bowled very well and had figures of 8-2-12-2.

At 59 for 5 in the 17th over Benwell Hill were in trouble but a belligerent knock from batsman 4 (out for 85) took them to 180 all out in the 40th over.

On arrival one of the umpires had said that rain was likely at 4.00 pm. He was right. There was heavy rain during the tea interval. Although the covers were quickly on part of the outfield became too wet and the game was called off.

10 points to both sides.

On 22 June the 1864s are at home (Matfen) to joint league leaders Hexham Leazes. Let's hope that availability is better!!
