Full marks to both teams & the umpires for wanting to get the game on despite underfoot conditions being wet & an almost constant drizzle. A late start meant 35 overs per side. The 1864's won the toss & chose to bat.
A steady start then Belinda (13, 13b, 3x4) accelerated, hitting 3x4 through cover & straight. Jack Patterson (3,14b) lofted to mid on in the 5th, 22-1 then in the 6th Belinda attacked again & the catch was taken at deep point, 25-2.
Will Carr & George McConnell, running well, put on 34 for the 3rd wicket both hitting boundaries, Will 1 & George 3 through cover. Then, in over 17 at 59, George (22,41b 3x4) was bowled by Jackson. Will followed at 63 (12, 27b, 1x4) in the next, very well caught at square leg by Cantrell off Wells's off breaks, 63-4.
Jacques & Arif then also ran well in putting together a partnership of 36 for the 5th wicket. Jacques blossoming to hit the short boundary on several occasions. At 99 in the 26th Arif, attacking, (14, 26b 1x4) was bowled by M Wells.
Missy (2) pulled M Wells to square leg at 108 in the 28th & then in the next Jacques (34, 29b,6x4) advanced to Barnett to be stumped by Japes. An excellent innings for his team scoring off each of his last 10 deliveries including 5x4, 114-7.
In the quest for scoring quick runs Jen (5), Albie (4) & Tom (2) perished & the innings closed at 129 after 33.5 overs, Barnett finishing with 3-9.
The Wylam innings was dominated by the seam attack of Albie McPate (rm) & George McConnell (lm). Each bowled 7 consecutive overs after which the visitors had slumped to 26-8.
Albie's opening over showed movement off the wicket & in the second George produced an in swinging yorker to bowl N Wells (2). In the third Porter (0) was lbw to Albie & in his next Teasdale (0) was bowled, 10-3.
Bowling a tight line & getting movement off the wicket both in & away, Albie took two more in his next, the 7th. Barnett (4) was well caught at 2nd slip by Missy & two balls later Wilson (0) was bowled. Jen's attacking field placings saw 3 slips, a gully, point, extra cover, mid off, mid wicket & fine leg, runs were restricted; 17-5 after 7 overs.
Albie's impressive spell continued with two wicket maidens in his 5th & 6th, Brown (10) edged to Belinda (w/k) & Jackson (4) was bowled. George produced another good yorker to bowl Cantrell (4) in the 14th over.
So after 14 overs Albie 6-12, George 2-14 the best opening spell for the 1864's this season. Jen (rm) & Tom (lm) took up the attack & in over 18, Tom's second, M Wells was caught by Arif, 9 down. In his next, Japes (13) skied a full toss towards square leg where w/k Belinda made good ground to take the catch; Wylam 45 all out in 19.2 overs.
An outstanding display in difficult conditions. Albie's 6-12, the best bowling analysis in the Club so far this season in an attack with George's complementary skills, 2-14.
Onward to Sat 20th July when the 1864's play Belsay as an away game, start 1330, 40/40. We hope you can be there to cheer the team on.
