SNCC won by 117 runs- 24 points, Ashington 4.
A cloudy, cool day in Gosforth, the Bulls won the toss & chose to bat. Tomlinson & Ewart faced the seam of Collins (Grove) & Hetherington (Park). Hetherington's three wayward overs cost 25 & he was replaced by Parkinson in over 8 when the total was 46 without loss, Nick 19*, Sam 14*.
In Parkinson's first over one bounced a bit & Nick (19), almost aiming to leave, edged to w/k Woolley. Angus began with a 2.4.4 flourish off Collins and the total had risen to 61-1 after 10 overs.
Nichols (ob) entered the attack in over 13 but the pair were untroubled in taking the score to 88 after 16 overs. A run out scare avoided in over 17 & then in over 18, Sullivan's (ob) first, Sam (35) aimed to slog sweep ball three & was bowled 91-2.
Will Phillips swept 2x4 off Nichols in over 21 but the slowness of the surface prevented much attacking intent unless the feet were used to get to the pitch. Angus (26*) survived a tough chance to mid off in over 24. Then in the last over before drinks Will (11) frustrated, pulled to mid on in Harmison's (ob) second over, 113-3 at halfway.
Sullivan (Park) & Harmison (Grove) bowled the following 12 overs for only 35 runs with batters seemingly reluctant to leave the crease. At 121 in the 28th over Angus (41) half forward, as lbw to Sullivan.
129-4 after 30 overs as the pair off spin bowlers continued. At 145 in the 35th over Ru Fletcher (10) chipped back to bowler Harmison. In his next over Olly Alexander (12) was also caught & bowled by Harmison. Back foot attacking shots thwarted by the lack of pace.
Ben Hobbs had started brightly using his feet to Sullivan & driving 2x4 but in Harmison's next he (12) ran past one & was stumped, 164-7 after 39 overs.
There followed a sensible & important partnership of 52 between Hamish Barrie & Ben Sidney-Wilmot as Collins (rm) & later Parkinson (rm) returned. Three abortive reverse sweeps notwithstanding, Hamish batted nicely & Ben Sid punched off the back foot through the offside.
In over 46 Ben swept Parkinson for 6 to mid wicket but then in over 48 he (34) was deceived by a slower ball from Parkinson which bowled him playing too soon, 216-8. In the last over Hamish (18) stroked 2.2.4.1 but then edged a drive to short third man, Nicky 1* & the innings closed at 230-9.
Harmison, 4-28 from 10 overs, Sullivan 2-33 also from 10 overs were the pick. 58 runs had been scored in the last 10 overs. The sun had emerged.
A slow start from the visitors as Sullivan & Hetherington faced the seam of Dresser (Park) & Fletcher (Grove). Joseph struggled to get his line right conceding 18 in 4 overs but in his 4th over Sullivan (5) edged down the legside for w/k Sam to pull off a brilliant catch at full stretch 32-1.
In the next over Hetherington (19), stuck on the crease, was bowled by Ru Fletcher, 36-2. Then in over 12, the ball of the day, as Ru found some movement off the pitch to bowl the dangerous Woolley (6), hitting the top of off stump, 40-3.
In Ben H's 5th over Will Phillips took off at mid wicket but just failed to hold on to a catch above his head & then was close to taking the ball as it fell behind him. The total had moved on to 80 in the 22nd over when Pearcey (14) pushing forward, was lbw to Nicky.
Ben's 6 over spell for 18 was exemplary.
Drinks were taken after a flying Will, in mid air, just failed to take a very hard chance at mid wicket & sustained a cut to a finger in the process: 92-4 at drinks.
Hamish & Nicky bowled the next 11 overs taking 4 wickets. In over 28 Nichols (19) swept Nicky high to deep square leg where Hamish moved in to take a well judged catch. In Hamish's next Banks (1) off the back foot, lobbed to Ru at mid wicket, & two overs later Harmison (24) lobbed to square leg where Ben Sid took the catch. Mistiming on the slow surface was a common theme, 109-7
Maiden overs followed & then in the 35th Collins (1) was bowled by Hamish as he swung & missed. Will P took a wicket with his 5th ball as Parkinson (0) was lbw, slog sweeping but missing, & Olly Alexander took a wicket with his 3rd ball as Tait (1) turned the ball straight to Ru at square leg.
A comprehensive win by 117 runs in just 36.3 overs. The Bulls remain in third place in Division 2 with three games to play.
