On your 16th birthday what better present could there be than to compile your highest score in senior cricket helping your team win. Driving powerfully, mostly straight down the ground, or pulling to mid wicket, Will Carr amassed 20x4 &1x6 from just 58 balls in 62 minutes concluding the innings by taking 22 from the 20th over getting to his century after the second boundary of 5 in the over !!
Then the Bulls took some smart catches courtesy of Ru Fletcher (3) & James Lunn (3), one each outstanding, to tumble the hosts all out for 87 after 16,5 overs.
The Bulls chose to bat & were very grateful to umpire Harry Richardson for standing when it appeared no other umpires had been contacted. After a 10 minute delay Sam Ewart & Olly Alexander faced the right arm seam of Noon & Stanger.
Sam (2) succumbed lbw to Stanger in over 2, 7-1. 25 runs from 5 overs but 42 after 6 as Hiscock's opening over yielded 17, 4x4 to Will Carr as short balls were pulled or overpitched ones driven.
Olly (24) was well caught by Wake at slip, low to his left, in Hiscock's 4th over, 77-2 after 12 overs. Ru (7) was bowled pushing forward to Stanger in the15th at 105. Will & Ben Sid then put together 67 runs in 5 overs as Will, using his feet well, drove down the ground virtually every ball, most disappearing into the Bank end fence, a stunning & chanceless display of ball striking.
In reply Wake & Gamsby faced the spin of Barrie (chicken run) & seam of Davidson (Bank). After a life at cover, Gamsby (2) was caught by Fletcher off Davidson, 7-1. In the 3rd T Bullerwell (4) chipped Hamish to Varun at square leg. In the next Wake (0) drove Davidson to mid on where Lunny obliged, 16-3.
In the 5th Noon (4) edged Lunny to slip where Ru took a good catch after a low juggle, 21-4. One over later Sam Lee bowled Wightman (0), 5 down. J Bullerwell & Hiscock resisted until at 51 in the 11th Bullerwell launched Varun high to wide long on where a retreating Lunny made good ground &, at full tilt, took an excellent tumbling catch over his shoulder, 6 down.
After a life to deepish mid off, Sam the unlucky bowler, Varun got another in his third over as Stanger (6) lost his off stump, 61-7. Hamish returned & in the 16th Jewitt (9) drove high to mid on where Lunny took the catch with aplomb. In the next, two wickets for Lunny as first Hiscock (31) drove powerfully back to short mid on where Ru clung on to a blinder & 3 balls later Lambert (0) was bowled.
Wickets shared in a comprehensive win highlighted by the importance of catches & sharp fielding. More to come please.
The Bulls face Lanchester or Washington (h) in the next round at home before 3rd July. We hope you can be there.
Duncan.
