Newcastle City win by 56 runs.

Sean Tindale led a much changed 1st X1 against Newcastle City in round 2 of the Tyneside Charity Bowl. Newcastle elected to bat. Mukhtar & Khan faced Tindale & Ruddick. A mis hook by Khan offered a chance after three balls of Tindale's first over but the swirling catch to backward point could not be taken by Chris Hewison. Two balls later Mukhtar edged to Hewison at slip, 2-1.

Khan & Hamza Parvez then proceeded to score freely all round the wicket, 40 after 4 overs & despite the introduction of McGee in over 5, had reached 75 in the 10th, when Khan (28) was bowled by McGee swinging to leg. Lee Crozier established some control & his 5 overs went for only 16. Perhaps frustrated, Parvez (52: 9x4, 43b) was then bowled by McGee in identical fashion. 90-3 in the 13th.

Faisal Mohammed (19), once of this parish, & Sandeep Padmalaya (25*) consolidated & then accelerated, taking 30 off the last 3 overs, James Ruddick picking up two wickets in his 4th over, the 20th, as McGee, running in, & Hewison took catches. 137-5 after 20o. A challenging total, more than might have been expected.

Chris Hewison & Oli McGee faced Ian Stubbs & the slow left arm of professional Zohaib Khan. McGee (9) took two boundaries off Stubbs but in advancing to Khan, skied, to be caught & bowled. Three balls later a most impassioned appeal saw David Edwards (0) unhappily adjudged lbw to Khan. 23-2 in the 4th.

Tindale & Hewison took the score to 52 before Tindale was also adjudged lbw to Khan amid some confusion after another impassioned appeal. At 67 Hewison's lone hand (46: 5x4, 1x6,37b) came to an end from the last ball of Amaan Ulhaq's first over, the 10th, 67-4.

Asif Mohammed, from the Grove end, bowling quickly & full, then took 4 wickets in two overs bowling Sidney-Wilmot (4) & Seymour (0), having Fletcher (5) lbw & then bowling Ruddick (4) as the innings subsided rapidly. Ulhaq then took the final two wickets Weetman (0) bowled & Stanyon (3) caught & bowled. The innings ending after only 13.5 overs, 81 all out, Crozier 1*.

Another cautionary tale unfolds. Got to bounce back again after a somewhat embarrassing batting display. Kane Williamson's mental strength not apparent. Next game important, we must continue to set a high standard.
