Director of Coaching

South Northumberland CC, a leading North East Premier League Club, is looking to appoint a Director of Coaching who will be responsible for the day to day running of Senior and Junior cricket at the Club and our indoor cricket facility, the North East Cricket Academy. The successful candidate will need to build upon the foundations that are in place and continue to grow and improve cricket at the Club. A critical element of the job will be to maintain the link between the Junior and Senior sections of the Club, ensuring juniors are being developed and integrated into Senior cricket. As a focal point of the Club, applicants need to have excellent coaching skills and good social, organisational, man management, computer/IT, administrative skills are preferable. If the applicant it still wanting to play cricket, we would like them to represent the club.

About the Club

South Northumberland Cricket Club is a club based in Newcastle upon Tyne whose teams play primarily in the North East Premier League. Since its formation it has been the Premier League’s most successful club, with the 1st XI winning the league championship ten times since 2003.  In 2016 the 1st XI won the National Club Championship for the third time in eleven seasons, claiming the title of best club side in Britain and the league again 2018.

We field 3 men’s senior teams on a Saturday - the 1st and 2nd XIs in the North East Premier League and our 3rd XI in the First Division of the West Tyne League – and an Academy team on a Sunday. We also have a growing women’s and girls’ section and field two women’s teams and a girls U14 side who reached the semi-final of the Lord Taverner’s national competition in 2019. In addition, we have over 350 boys and girls in our junior section and numerous of these players playing county and district representative cricket.

We provide year-round coaching and playing facilities through our indoor cricket school, operated through our wholly owned subsidiary Newcastle Cricket Centre Limited.

The club is seeking to recruit a Director of Coaching to oversee the provision of both senior and junior cricket across the club and the cricket centre. The Director of Coaching will report to and work with the CEO of the club.

Responsibilities

Senior Cricket

  • Create a positive and enjoyable playing environment for all playing members
  • Lead a positive cricket culture of continual commitment and improvement
  • Develop a pre season schedule with a focus on coaching, fitness, and development of players
  • Implement a professional training programme that will continue on from pre season
  • Coordinate all senior training sessions
  • Assist player selection in all senior teams
  • Assist and be involved in the recruitment of senior players
  • Ensure Juniors are integrated effectively into Senior Cricket
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to all Senior captains
  • Present an end of season review and recommendations for the next season
  • Organise and manage the winter nets for senior players
  • Attend the Club’s end of season Players’ Awards evening  

Junior Cricket

  • Oversee and play an active part in the Junior coaching at the Club, including making any necessary changes to the structure of the management and coaching of Junior cricket
  • Develop, in conjunction with Junior Managers and other coaches, a training program for each age group
  • Engage and manage other coaches to ensure the training program is implemented effectively and within an agreed budget
  • Ensure a safe and friendly environment for all Juniors
  • In conjunction with team managers decide who should be invited to participate in the Club’s Academy program
  • Devise and implement the Club’s Academy program
  • In conjunction with Junior Managers and Fixture Secretary select teams and organise fixtures for all of our junior teams
  • Ensure that appropriate players play a full part in the Northumberland County Player Program and Durham Academy Program
  • Assist Junior Managers in organising and attend end of season Players’ Awards

Cricket Centre

  • The Director of Coaching will be responsible for providing quality well organised coaching courses for junior cricketers in two 10 week blocks during the winter and 1-1 coaching
  • Recruit appropriate coaching staff and oversee all coaching programs
  • In conjunction with the CEO, prepare a budget for the facility that is agreed with the Board and be responsible for delivering to the agreed budget
  • To assist in the delivery of a coaching program, both winter and summer, for a local independent school

Flexibility re Role

Although the role is a full time permanent one it would be possible to split the role in to a job share depending on the candidate. The role could be part time, full time, split into a summer and winter role or be exclusively a coaching role with administrative support provided. Although we are not recruiting for a playing role it is important that if the successful candidate is playing club cricket that they do so at the club to ensure they are fully committed to the club and integrated in to its culture and ethos.

Remuneration

The position offers a highly competitive salary with significant potential to supplement income and other possible opportunities. 

Additional tasks may be required from time to time at the request of the CEO for which an appropriate hourly rate will be paid.

Timing of appointment

South Northumberland CC is looking to make this appointment as soon as possible with the chosen candidate in post by September / October 2021.
