Comfortable win for 2's as Dale stars again

9th May 2019

Saturday saw temperatures reach high of 8 degrees as South Northumberland 2nd XI welcomed Whitburn to Roseworth Terrace. After captain Ru Fletcher won the toss and elected to bat, openers Sam Dale and John Harbottle made a watchful start against the seam of Elliot (1-36) and Quinan (0-50), before the former put his foot down as the partnership passed 100. An outstanding opening partnership eventually ended when Harbottle skied Elliot to square leg for a well-made 65. The returning Dave Edwards came and went for 7, before Dale went through to his maiden South North century, an outstanding achievement. He fell in the final over for a brilliant 121, and a rapid 37* from Alex Weetman allowed the home side to declare on 243-3 from 50 overs.

Whitburn began watchfully until Allan Davidson (4-28) clean bowled Mallaby (1) and James Ruddick (1-20) did the same to Molloy (1) to leave the visitors reeling at 8-2. Marshall (13) and Wood (7) struggled with the guile of Davidson and the pace and bounce of Ruddick before both fell to Davidson with the score at 30-4. Davidson clean bowled Hurst for 9, and Richard Brook (3-19) had Bell (22) caught in the covers and Quinan (2) LBW to leave Whitburn in the mire at 80-7. Chambers (16) and Johnson (17) played their shots, but wickets for spin duo Dale and Brook combined with a Dave Edwards run out finished the away side off for 97 to hand the 2’s another 30-point win.

The 2’s are back in league action at home to defending champions Tynemouth on Saturday May 11.
