On a sunny evening at Ropery Lane a Bulls team without Drissell, Cragg, Wightman, Alexander & Gough gave further opportunities to Will Phillips, Sam Ewart & Sam Lee. Being asked to bat the Cestrians put together an opening partnership of 119 in 64 balls courtesy of Jacob McCann & Andrew Smith (42, 29b 6x4 1x6) the latter caught by Sol off the bowling of Calum Fletcher at long on from a clever slower ball.
The left handed McCann continued to punish any waywardness, pulling powerfully to leg & driving through cover. He lost partner Hughes Rowlands (3) lbw to Nicky at 140 after 76 balls but James Thompson (18*,15b 3x4) helped maintain the momentum as McCann reached an impressive 91* (54b 12x4 3x6) at the close of 100 balls.
The bowling had tended to be too short early on, better later on, meaning that169 was a challenging total to chase.
In reply Hewison & Bell faced the seam of Robinson & Durrani, followed by the spin of Q Hughes & Heslop. After a Sol straight 6 to the houses, a lost ball meant the use of a very old one suited the fielding side, & next ball Sol (10) was caught at mid off aiming to go long but mistiming 18-1.
A partnership of 33 between Bushy & Hewey but then 5 wickets in the space of 21 balls derailed the innings. Ball 28, Bushy (20) caught by Colledge at point off Hughes-Rowlands, 51-2. ball 30 Rob (1) advancing to Q but missing to be stumped, 53-3, ball 38 David's (2) back foot drive went straight back & was caught & bowled by Gaby Hughes-Pinan, 58-4, ball 41 Hewey (24) caught by Gaby H-P on the leg side off Hughes-Rowlands 61-5 & ball 49 Sam (1) lbw to Robinson, 68-6.
A spirited partnership of 40 between Will Phillips & Oli McGee ended at ball 81 as Oli (18) edged Hughes-Rowlands to w/k McCann, 108-7. A final partnership of 20 until Will Phillips (39, 29b 2x4 2x6) an excellent knock, was caught by Gaby H-P at deep mid wicket off Durrani, 128-8.
The innings closed at 134-8 Nicky 8*, Calum 1*. The Bulls, not really firing on the night, ended 35 short.
But there is always tomorrow !
