The Academy started their season with a convincing victory against Newcastle at Jesmond. Having won the toss and elected to bat the Academy lost the early wickets of Eashan Ragbir to a run out and Calum Fletcher, bowled trying to hit the ball out of the ground having taken 12 off the first over. Following the dismissal of Ben Sidney-Wilmot for 13, stumped with the keeper standing back, Ru Fletcher (20) and Bobby Green (44) batted sensibly to bring some stability to the innings. This allowed Mark Dormer (34) and Cam Skinner (54*) to bring some impetus to the back end of the innings, with the Academy closing on 207 for 9 off their 40 overs.

In reply Newcastle got off to a solid start and were on 39 after 15 overs when they lost their first wicket to a run out from an Eashan Ragbir direct hit. Once Will Varley dismissed opener Snoxall (41) with an excellent caught and bowled any impetus to Newcastle’s innings was lost and wickets were taken at regular intervals. Calum Fletcher (8-3-16-2), Will Varley (6-0-22-2), Sree Kanakala (7-0-24-3) and Eashan Ragbir (0.4-0-0-1) were the wicket takers with Cam Skinner completing a fine all round performance with a direct hit from the deep to run out Newcastle’s number 3. Newcastle finished on 113 all out. A fine team performance with some excellent ground fielding.
