Stamfordham won by 64 runs.

A youthful 1864 X1, with an all junior bowling attack, stuck to their task admirably when faced by a more experienced Stamfordham, going down by 64 runs in the Tom Barlow Cup.

Rain just before the start meant a reduction of overs to 18/side. Bowling in damp conditions not ideal & the Stamfordham openers Smith & Murphy punished variations of length & line building an opening partnership of 64 as the left arms of Tom Oliver & Tom Hunter attacked.

Then in Archit's first over Smith (11) was run out courtesy of a smart pick up & throw by Tom Oliver at mid wicket to w/k Matty Rathbone. Two balls later Murphy (48) was caught by Dominic Johnson off Archit, 65-2 after 7 overs.

As Archit & Arjun Godse (rm) bowled the 8 overs between 7 & 14 the total rose to 111 when McGrath (26) was caught by Rayan at mid off, Archit the bowler. Both Archit & Arjun had kept their nerve when the batters were attacking, no easy task.

In the 15th Perowne (27) advanced but was stumped by Matty off Dominic. 6 more wickets fell in the 4 overs remaining. Naisbit (1) bowled by Rayan, Carr (6) caught by Paddy at mid wicket off Rayan. Archit then had Devine (0) caught & bowled & next ball Thotalu (0) lbw, 134-8.

In the last over Johnston (1) was bowled & Turnbull (0) caught & bowled both to Rayan. 135 all out Archit 4-29, whose googly they found hard to pick & Rayan a sparkling 4-6,  rewards for bowling well under pressure & straight.

In reply the 1864's got off to a difficult start. Will Carr (0) bowled by Johnston from ball 4. George Gray (4) caught & bowled by Thotalu in over 2 as the ball stuck in the pitch. Then two wickets for Carr's off spin in the 6th as Matty Rathbone (12, 2x4) was caught by Devine, pulling to mid wicket. 4 balls later Belinda (8) was lbw aiming to mid wicket.

Tom Hunter (0) aiming to pull, was bowled by Devine in the 7th. Paddy (1) was caught by McGrath, miscuing to cover in the 9th, 36-6.  Arjun was defiant, Rayan too until Rayan was caught by Murphy & Archit bowled first ball both off  Devine, 46-8.

Then came the partnership of the innings, 25, as Tom Oliver showed great enterprise in compiling 22* including 2x2, 2x4,1x6 in company with Arjun (5*) the innings ending at 71-8 after 18 overs.

Tough but character building for young players. The effort was evident, the fielding keen, some nice shots were played, things to learn, we must continue !

Duncan.
