A good start to the 2026 season for the 1864's with a win away at Stamfordham. Giving debuts to Paddy Rathbone, w/k Matthew Rathbone, Aryan Kalluri, Ani Kalluri & Alice Oliver as the important scorer, on a cool, grey day with showers forecast, the visitors won the toss & invited the hosts to bat.

The wicket was slow but with only the occasional variation of bounce. Denham & Murphy faced the seam of Tom Oliver (lm) & Aryan Kalluri (rm). At 10 in the 4th over Murphy (5) played on to Aryan. In the 7th over, with the total at 21, Tom took two wickets. Denham (8) edged to w/k Matthew & 3 balls later McGrath (0) driving hard towards mid off, was very well caught by Jacques moving smartly to his right & damaging his hand in the process.

There followed a partnership of 40 in 9 overs between Perowne & Smith as Ani Kalluri (rm) & Archit Upadhye (lb) took up the attack. In over17 Smith (19) miscued a low full toss to be caught by bowler Archit, 64-4. Two wickets in two overs as Perowne's (14) leading edge was taken by bowler Ani. In the next Devine (11) missed a sweep & was bowled by Archit, 69-6.

There followed 3 maidens in a row as Ani & Archit bowled tightly. In Archit's 8th over, the 27th, Atkinson (3) mistimed a sweep to be caught at mid wicket by Aadi. In the next Hall (1) was yorked by the returning Aryan, 77-8.

Tom returned in the 31st over after Archit & Ani had finished their spells. In the 30th Naylor's (21) top edge off Aryan was very well caught by w/k Matthew retreating & leaping to take an excellent one handed catch, 102-9. In over 36 Jacob's first, Turnbull (2) was run out as a call for a single was refused & he slipped to allow Aadi to throw to w/k Matthew to effect the run out.

A commendable effort, good fielding, good catching, tight bowling in the main though 14 wides are something to work on. Brief intermittent rain showers had not affected the overs available.

In reply Aadi & Olly faced the seam of Johnston (lm) & Turnbull (rm). At 13 in the 4th over Aadi (6) drove uppishly towards mid off where Devine pulled off an excellent one handed catch. Three overs later Olly (6), who had been untroubled, got a leading edge off Johnston, which lobbed to Denham, 15-2. Jacob McCord drove 4x4 in the next 3 overs, down the ground & another in over 12. Jan (7) missed a sweep to be lbw to Devine's off spin in the 13th 42-3.

As Murphy (rm) & Devine (ob) toiled, there followed a match winning partnership of 63 between Jacob & Jacques Graham in 13 overs. Jacob (72* 57b, 10x4, 1x6) driving down the ground with certainty & Jacques (14,47b) the perfect foil, defending well & rotating sensibly, only to be unluckily run out when responding to Jacob's optimistic call for a single at 105 in the 26th over.

The winning boundary was struck by Jacob after 3 balls of the 27th over. A resounding, 6 wicket win with good fielding, penetrative & accurate bowling, wides notwithstanding, a solid team effort. Bravo !
