The third team both midweek and on Sundays has seen an improvement in terms of the environment created to enable both those senior cricketers wishing to enjoy their cricket and further the education of junior cricketers identified as having the potential to step up into senior cricket.
The main reason for this has been the attitude of senior players in “buying” into the club’s philosophy for third team cricket. When available Tristan Mears-White, Chris Dresser and Ian Gilthorpe have been instrumental in this whilst Martin Speight’s role with the Sunday team has improved the attitude and expectations of both juniors and seniors.
Unfortunately due to the weather and pitch availability the number of games played has been less than a normal third eleven season.
There have been some noticeable improvements from junior cricketers and several players have come to the fore. In addition it has been able to get a better understanding of the majority of players employed during the season.
Iftikhaar Ul Haq and Mayank Banerjee look to be excellent seam bowling/batting prospects both in terms of ability and attitude.
Xavier Taylor looks to be a real find as a batsman / wicket keeper.
Michael Shotton’s leg spin has improved significantly especially his self-belief. (63.2 overs-16 wickets for 284 runs) Michael has been the pick of the bowlers in the under 15 matches and he has the attitude and desire to practice. As a result he should continue to improve and push for a second team space next year.
Kurran Dhugga’s off spin figures look good (56 overs-17 wickets for 214 runs). However his football commitments limit the time that he is able to spend in the winter improving and at the moment he is not at a level to warrant second team selection.
2 players are involved with their respective North of England age group squads (James Carding, Jack Jessop)
Jack Jessop (under 13) has batted at five and improved significantly in terms of how to construct an innings. Potentially a class batsman.
Owen Hollins has improved significantly this year and has regained the desire to practice hard at his bowling. He is tall and potentially has a strong physique so could develop well.
James Hutton’s bowling is under rated in general but having played for Seaton Burn for the past two years he is reliable and with the wicketkeeper stood up to the stumps could be a very useful traditional club seamer. (42 overs-11 maidens-7 wickets for 87 runs). By the end of the summer a score of 81 against
